RALEIGH -- Score another lopsided win for Athens Drive wrestling.

It didn't take long for the Jaguars to find success against Fuquay-Varina on Wednesday, as six of the first seven wrestlers scored pins to catapult Athens to the 58-12 win.

"Six-point wins are always big for us so whenever we can get those and try to limit giving up six-points wins, we've got a shot to win it," Athens coach Mike Wood said.

In all, Athens (8-3) won 11 of the 14 weight classes.

The first of Athens' string of pins came from Robert Christley (160-pound class), who only needed 39 seconds to complete the feat.

After the Jags' Garrett Smith (171) pinned his opponent at the 1:36 mark, Fuquay's Soren Ferrell won 5-2 at 189 pounds to bring the score to 12-3 in Athens' favor.

It was the closest the Bengals ever got to Athens' lead, as Bryan Houston (215), Dan Alston (285), Shane Goodchild (103) and his brother Ryan (112) all won by fall as well, increasing the Jags' lead 36-3.

Out of the six pins on the night, Shane's pin may have been the most impressive. Down 11-3 with time running low in the third round, the freshman turned the tide of his match and scored a pin at the 4:36 mark.

"That was a big win for us," Wood said.

All it took was a second of vulnerability to turn Shane's match with Robert Fernandez on its head.

"I just looked at the board and knew I had to pin him," Shane said. "I've been working legs a lot in practice so I just figured I could ride that. When he started standing up he opened himself up for a banana split so I just rode that."

Other Athens wrestlers who won their matches handily were Samuel Greenstein (125) by forfeit, Jeffrey Dion (130) by major decision, Dan Martin (135) by tech fall.

Cliff Griffin (140) and Kevin Chou (145) also added minor decisions over their opponents well after the winning team had been decided.

Athens now boats a 2-1 record in conference.

"We're hoping to ride this win and go into this weekend's tournament and do something there as well," Wood said. "I'm pretty happy with most of our guys tonight."

Fuquay's only other winners were Jamel Carter, who scored a minor decision at 152, and David MacMillen who scored a pin with just :10 seconds left in his match at 119-pounds.

This weekend Athens will compete in the Beast of the East tournament at Croatan High School.
