If the Carolina RailHawks beat the Chicago Fire in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Sunday, David Beckham and the L.A. Galaxy won’t be their next opponent.

The Galaxy fell 1-0 to the Richmond Kickers, a USL Second Division team, Tuesday night in Richmond, Va.

Had the Galaxy won, and if Carolina wins Sunday, the two teams would've met at SAS Soccer Park on Aug. 7 in the Open Cup quarterfinals.

Beckham did not play in Richmond. The star-studded midfielder is reportedly to join the Galaxy, whom he signed with earlier this year, on Friday and play his first match on July 21 in Los Angeles in an exhibition against the London-based English Premier League giant Chelsea FC.

Had a match between Carolina and L.A. occurred, there was no guarantee Beckham would have played or even accompanied the team to the Triangle. But with the Galaxy's loss Tuesday, the possibility is now non-existent.

Carolina plays its third-round Open Cup match Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at SAS Soccer Park.

If Carolina beats the Fire, the RailHawks will host the Kickers in the quarterfinals Aug. 7 at SAS Soccer Park. The two teams met in the preseason, with the Kickers winning 3-1 in Richmond.
