Neither team could manage a first down in the opening quarter, then Jones found an opening in the Fuquay defense and broke a 55-yard touchdown run one minute into the second quarter. Senior kicker, Andrew Ammons kicked the point after to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead.

Fuquay couldn’t get any offense going in the first half as the stingy Cougars continued their dominance on defense, not allowing a Fuquay first down in the half.

WF-R recovered a Bengals fumble in the final minute of the half and used two plays to score. Cougars senior quarterback, Dan Tomchik hit senior receiver Fabion Seabrook at the one yard line with :10 remaining. Jones scored again as time expired.

The Bengals blocked the point after attempt, and the Cougars took a 13-0 lead into intermission.

The Cougars used another Fuquay turnover to set up a score early in the third. Senior linebacker, Mickey McGuire snatched an interception to set the Cougars up with a short field at their own 44. Tomchik connected with Seabrook again, this time in the end zone, for a 24 yard touchdown pass a few plays later. The Cougars’ two point conversion attempt failed.

WF-R scored again in the fourth quarter as sophomore running back, Seth hall capped a 73-yard drive with a four-yard scoring run. Ammons added the extra point to give the Cougars a 26-0 lead. Jones, the Cougars leading rusher with 1,651 yards this fall, was injured on the drive.

He was carried from the field with an ankle injury. Jones left the game with 121 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bengals got on the board late in the fourth quarter as Cory Hunter scored from one yard out to finish a 75-yard Fuquay scoring drive. The two point attempt failed.

The Cougars allowed Fuquay only 156 yards of offense in the game.

“Our defense has been playing well all year, WF-R coach, Reggie Lucas said. “Overall, I was pleased that our kids stayed after it and were able to get it done.”

Top-seeded WF-R (14-0) will host the 4AA Eastern regional final next week at Heritage High against fifth-seeded Fayetteville Jack Britt (13-1).
