RALEIGH — Athens Drive had faced just one pass attempt all night against Enloe's wishbone-option offense, so it was ironic that the game-sealing play came on an Enloe 28-yard completion on a second-and-17 with just under two minutes left.
With no timeouts remaining, the Jaguars couldn't stop Enloe when it needed to — summing up the 30-28 Athens loss on Friday.
The Eagles used a grind-it-out rushing attack that featured four different running backs that found the end zone.
"We didn't make the stop when we had to," Athens coach Jeff Smouse said. "We just didn't make the play and we've got to learn to do that."
In all, Athens gave up 375 yards at more than eight yards per carry.
The Jaguars (1-1) got on the board in their second drive, reeling off nine consecutive runs, as junior KyRee Green scored on a one-yard run to tie the game at seven apiece.
Green gave the Eagles defense fits early, rushing for 101 yards in the first half but only 41 more in the second.
"We're going to get better and better with him," Smouse said.
Despite the ensuing kickoff bouncing off his facemask, Enloe's Jordan Maness had 73-yard kickoff return that set up an 18-yard David Highsmith touchdown run on the very next play to make it 14-7, Enloe.
"We've had problems with this offense in the past and we had a problem with it today," Smouse said. "They run it well."
After Green scored his second touchdown for Athens, the point-after try was botched after the snap skidded into the Jags' holder. Enloe's A.J. Winston scored to open the third from a yard out, giving the Eagles a 21-13 lead.
Enloe kept Athens in the game with five personal foul penalties, one that put Athens on the 50-yard line to open a drive.
Jags quarterback Ben Snotherly scored from 30 yards out on a draw play. Snotherly went 7-16 passing for 84 yards and ran 12 times for 82 yards.
Green ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 21-all, but it was short lived. Four plays later, on just his second carry of the night, Qwen Yarborough broke loose for a 71-yard Enloe touchdown run, and gave the Eagles a 27-21 lead with 4:50 left in the third quarter.
"It was disappointing, but we couldn't outscore them," Smouse said.
Enloe kicker Harrison Carr hit a 25-yard field goal to give his team a two-possession fourth quarter lead. It was too much for Athens to surmount, even though Green ran for his third score of the night to put the Jags within two with 3:27 left.
Smouse said his job this week was to pick up his team and keep them from dwelling on the season's first loss.
"We're still a young team," Smouse said. "I just have to make sure these kids don't give up because our season isn't lost."
