Cary High School sophomore Michael White was recovering this week after collapsing during a football scrimmage at Wakefield High School.

As a Friday night scrimmage was ending, the lineman was on the sidelines talking to teammates when he fell to the ground. White was quickly treated by medical staff, which used a defibrillator and CPR to revive him. White was listed in critical condition through much of Friday night. But he was upgraded the next day. And, Cary athletics director Kurt Glendenning said, he was able to climb out of bed on Sunday.

"Walking is a relative term," Glendenning said. "But he has gotten out of bed and I believe he's eating."

Glendenning said players and coaches were understandably shaken at the time, but were improving in morale as White's condition progressed. "We are rationalizing it [as] a good thing it happened where it did because he was taken care for and was saved," he said.

It is unclear what caused White to collapse or whether he'll be cleared to play football again.
