APEX — There were plenty of turnovers around, but Apex capitalized.

Apex spoiled Middle Creek’s homecoming, winning the turnover battle and leaving with a 28-6 victory on Friday night.

It was Apex’s first victory over Middle Creek in a series that started early this decade.

“We didn’t mention it to them all week,” Apex coach Bob Wolfe said.

It seemed like every time the Mustangs had a chance to score, Apex came up with a big turnover.

For the night, the Cougars had five interceptions, while the Mustangs had three.

“We moved the ball well in the first half,” Middle Creek coach Sean Crocker said. “But when you get inside the 20 and turn it over like that, it is going to be a long night.”

Middle Creek’s Matt Lexton was actually the first to come up with an interception, leading to the first score, a field goal.

But on the Mustangs’ next possession, after moving the ball down to the Cougars’ 27-yard line, Joey Powell came up with the first of his two interceptions.

Apex had to punt back after three plays, but the Cougars got the ball back after a fumble on the punt.

Then Apex running back Kevin Fogg emerged.

He broke a few tackles, juked and spun his way on a 35-yard touchdown run.

Taylor Welsh ran for the 2-point conversion for an 8-3 lead.

Fogg led all rushers, compiling 88 yards on 13 carries. He had taken last week off with a bad ankle, and Wolfe was glad to have him back.

“He has a really good sense of where people are coming from, great vision,” Wolfe said.

“He can cut, change directions and accelerate out of that change so quickly. That’s just a gift.”

Apex’s Bo Ogunnowo came up with an interception after Stephen Sladek’s 21-yard touchdown reception was nullified for holding.

The Cougars’ Brock McGehee came up with the next interception when the Mustangs were deep in their own territory. He ran it back 20 yards for a touchdown and a 15-3 lead.

Two plays later, the Mustangs got an interception of their own, and Matt Frongello returned it 40 yards, setting up a 31-yard field goal and cutting the score to 15-6.

“We felt pretty good about the lead,” Wolfe said. “I don’t ever feel confident. Not against them with what they can do, but we felt good about what we had done.”

Bryce Sneed’s third-quarter interception set up Fogg’s 12-yard TD reception from Houston Hawley.

That was all the Cougars needed.

Apex’s defense held Middle Creek to minus-4 yards in the second half.
