Tri-8 teams safely advance
Apex, Green Hope, Athens Drive, Panther Creek all through to 2nd round.
All four area soccer teams were first-round victors Tuesday in the NCHSAA 4-A soccer tournament.Apex, the Tri-Eight champion, beat Enloe 2-1. Jeff Palmer and Parker McNeely scored for the Cougars (17-0-2), and Matt Thompson had an assist. The Cougars will play Hoke County of Fayetteville Cape Fear in the second round.Green Hope, the Tri-Eight’s No. 2 seed, beat Wilmington New Hanover 2-1, thanks to goals from Ryan McDonnell and Magnus Sorensen. Ryan Steele and Chad Drimer had assists for the Falcons (17-2-2), who will play Northern Durham or Fayetteville Sanford in the second round.Athens Drive, the Tri-Eight’s No. 3 seed, travelled to Rockingham and defeated Richmond County 2-0 on goals from Omar Asad and Louis Sabourin. The Jaguars (12-5-4) will play the winner of Wednesday’s Broughton-Southeast Raleigh match in the second round.Panther Creek, the Tri-Eight’s No. 5 seed, knocked off Greater Neuse River Conference champion Clayton 4-1. The Catamounts overcome an early 1-0 deficit to win their first playoff game in their first postseason appearance. Nate Latigue scored twice for Panther Creek, and Gabe Latigue and Michael Zerman had one apiece. Giampier Oblach, Gabe Latigue and Nate Latigue each had one assist, too. The Catamounts (8-15-0) will play at Chapel Hill Friday at 6:30 p.m.
