Carolina falters at home, away
RailHawks fall to eighth in the USL-1 table with 0-1-2 week.

At least the fireworks weren’t a dud.

The same can’t be said for the RailHawks’ 90 minutes of soccer that preceded the post-match festivities July 3 — or what transpired the rest of the week.

Carolina played USL First Division front runner Vancouver to a 0-0 draw before a crowd of 5,189 at SAS Soccer Park on July 3 — a match that was played mostly in the midfield and generated little attacking flare from either side.

Though it was the RailHawks’ third scoreless tie on their home pitch and sixth draw of the season, they once again took solace in earning one point instead of none.

“We’re not sad about it,” said forward Connally Edozien. “At least we didn’t lose the game.”

Just when it seemed the Railhawks’ offensive struggles subsided — they entered the match having scored six goals in their previous two matches — Carolina couldn’t get anything going up top. Tuesday’s shutout was also the sixth time Carolina failed to score a goal in 13 USL-1 matches.

The RailHawks had just five shots on the night, but none forced Vancouver goalkeeper Lutz Pfannenstiel to make a save to earn his clean sheet.

“It’s the same as every game, we’re struggling in the front,” said midfielder Stuart Brightwell. “Not [forward] Anthony [Maher], but just getting forward. I don’t know why. We sometimes look dangerous, but we just cannot put the ball in the net.”

Of Carolina’s five shots, only two were potential goals in the making. Both occurred in the match’s first 12 minutes.

In the fifth minute, Edozien received a pass near the penalty spot from Chris Carrieri, but the Carolina forward misplayed it and the chance was squandered.

Six minutes later, Brightwell popped a ball over the Vancouver defense to Carrieri on the right flank. The diminutive winger dribbled into the box, but his right-footed blast sailed well wide of the frame.

Vancouver nearly got on the board a minute after Carrieri’s miss.

Vancouver’s Joey Gjersten broke in on Chris McLellan’s goal with defender Frankie Sanfilippo in his pocket. Gjersten got off a shot, but Sanfilippo’s pressure forced it to sail over the frame.

In the 17th minute, McClellan made the first of his four saves by turning away a David Testo header at the near post. On the ensuing corner kick, Jeff Clarke volleyed a loose ball at the top of the box off the crossbar.

The Whitecaps thought they’d taken a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when Alfredo Valente beat McClellan at the near post, but it was ruled a no-goal because Valente was offside when Tony Donatelli played the ball to him.

In the 73rd minute, McClellan came up big again when he stopped Geordie Lyall on a breakaway to keep the match scoreless.

“I thought we were the better team,” said Carolina coach Scott Schweitzer. “I can’t be mad at the guys. They played hard and we’ll just build from it. We were the better team. We deserved more than a point.”

Rochester 2, Carolina 1

Carolina appeared on its way to another tie Friday in Rochester, N.Y., but Rhinos forward Hamed Diallo dealt the RailHawks a crushing blow when he scored the go-ahead goal in stoppage time to deliver Carolina a 2-1 loss.

Diallo scored both goals for Rochester, his other coming in the third minute.

Carolina’s Anthony Maher scored the RailHawks’ lone goal in the 11th minute, on an assist from Chris Carrieri.

With the score still tied, 1-1, the RailHawks had a three-on-one breakaway opportunity in the 90th minute, but Rochester goalkeeper Chase Harrison stopped Frankie Sanfilippo’s shot.

Action went the other way immediately. Scott Palguta carried the ball down the field before sending a cross into the box, which found the head of Diallo for the game winner.

Carolina 2, Montreal 2

Carolina salvaged a point out of the weekend after tying Montreal 2-2 in a physical match Sunday afternoon in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.

Thirty fouls, 18 for Carolina; 12 for Montreal, were called between the two teams and 11 cards were shown. In the ninth minute, Carolina’s Anthony Maher and Montreal’s Andres Arango got in a fight that resulted in red cards for both players.

Joey Worthen found the net twice in the first half for the RailHawks, once in the 17th minute and again in the 29th.

But Carolina (4-4-7, 19 points) couldn’t protect the lead.

Montreal’s Charles Gbeke scored goals in the 63rd and 65th minutes to pull the match even, ultimately handing the RailHawks their seventh tie of the season.

The two teams don’t wait long before going at each other again. The Impact come to Cary Friday for a 7:30 p.m. meeting at SAS Soccer Park.
