CARY — Outfielders on the Panther Creek softball team could've gotten away with almost anything on Wednesday.

They could've stood behind the fence, played without gloves or done "grass angels" in the rain-dampened turf. On this day, they were about as useful as the Maytag repair man.

Catamount pitcher Katie Moore didn't allow a single Durham Jordan batter to hit a ball past the infield as she one-hit the Falcons en route to a 10-0 victory in six innings.

While the infielders were active, the outfielders were visibly bored. Some even teased Moore about letting somebody hit the ball to them for a change.

"[The outfielders] were complaining about that," Moore said. "I know they were getting bored, I was just in a groove."

Moore struck out 12 batters on the day, including the first three she faced. The only hit came in the top of the fifth on a weak pop fly that fell in front of diving first baseman Meaghan Roach.

Roach still tried to throw out the runner, but it was a second too late.

"There's always that one hit. I'd rather it be hard-hit than a little hit," Moore said of the play that ended her no-hitter.

Moore later added she may have jinxed things by thinking about the possibility of the no-hitter during the game.

"She's a pretty good pitcher. She's good for anywhere from six to 10 strikeouts a game. She's usually really good about getting those pop flys from other players," PC coach Brian Johnson said. "She's a good player, she can hit her spots ... She can hang with the best of them in our conference."

Catamount batters accounted for nine hits on the day, but really did their damage on the base paths. Panther Creek had seven stolen bases on the day, and scored half their runs on defensive miscues like past balls.

"We're a really aggressive team. I don't mind getting an out as long as they're running hard," Johnson said.

Leadoff center fielder Kayla Walker, who has signed to play at Meredith next year, went 2-for-2 on the day with one RBI and three runs scored.

Shortstop Heather Hurst had a game-high two RBI while Roach and Madison Shaw each added one apiece.

"We got the bats going and ended it early," Johnson said.

On Friday, Panther Creek lost its first game of the year to Fuquay-Varina by the 11-0 score, dropping their record to 3-1 on the season.
