About halfway into their season, the Panther Creek girls tennis team had twice as many wins as losses following an easy home-court victory over Cary High on Thursday.

The 9-0 win put the Catamounts’ record at 4-2 at press time, having lost only to Green Hope and Athens Drive. They were set to play Middle Creek on Monday.

Led by No. 1 singles player Brittany Bullock, this is the first year the team has had seniors, said Panther Creek coach Stephen Solis.

The relatively new school graduates its first senior class in the spring.

Bullock is one of seven seniors on the team.

“I’ve seen a marked difference not just in their ability to play the game but to understand the game,” Solis said.

Bullock made all-conference last year, and Solis said he expects both her and sophomore teammate Ashley Payne, the No. 2 singles player, to move to all-conference this season.

But that’s not enough for Bullock, who finished third in the conference tournament last year.

“I would like to get much further in the regionals,” which follow the conference tournament, Bullock said.

Solis said he expects great things from Payne in her junior and senior years. “She’s a real up-and-coming player,” he said. “Hopefully she’ll make some waves in the regional tournament next year.”

Cary High coach Noelle Simmons had to be just a tad regretful about losing “two good players” to Panther Creek because of redistricting — Bullock and teammate Cristina Kim, who usually plays No. 2 doubles.

Simmons’ team is younger and less experienced than Panther Creek’s.

Simmons said her goals for Cary High tennis this year are to teach the sport to as many girls as possible and to increase the level of play for the top six.

Cary High has 18 players this year, large for a tennis team. “I didn’t have cuts,” Simmons said.
