CARY — Cary head coach Ben Kolstad was able to sum up his team’s first game of the season in one sentence, “We made a lot of mistakes at crucial times”.
The Imps (0-1) lost its home opener to Broughton (1-0) by a final score of 21-6.
“The 1st half we just kept battling back and forth and it was kind of whoever scored first [would take control],” said Broughton head coach Chris Martin.
Cary had a chance to score late in the first half when they had the ball at the Broughton 12 yard line. The Capitals stopped the threat, however, when Sam Stone picked the ball off inside the 10.
Four plays later, Will Turner threw a 45 yard deep pass to Jamal Kirtonwith only 5 seconds left in the half. The extra point kick was blocked sending the teams into the half with the score 6-0 in favor of the Capitals.
Kolstad told his players at halftime to treat the game as if it were 0-0 and take the lead on second half's opening drive. It was the Caps though, who came out on their first drive and scored when Jonathan Foreman dove into the end zone on an 18-yard pass by Will Turner. Jeff Moore ran the ball across the goal line for the 2-point conversion to make the score 14-0.
Cary answered though, with a score of their own. DeAndre Henry broke a 37-yard run to the end zone with 3:44 left in the 3rd quarter. The extra point was missed however, when the ball banged off the left upright, making the score 14-6.
Anthony Colon was able to seal the fate of the Imps when he returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown with only 3:05 left on the clock. Hayden Pezzoni converted on the extra point making the score 21-6.
Although Cary had more total yards than Broughton (261 to the Caps 202) and was able to hold the Caps to 0-for-9 on third down and only 1-for-4 in the red-zone, they hurt themselves with 3 turnovers and 15 penalties for 135 yards.
Fortunately for the Imps, there are still plenty of games to fix mental mistakes — starting with next Friday at Northern Nash.
