Playing at home as a No. 1 seed in the 4-A team tennis playoffs, Green Hope made quick work of visiting Wakefield on Oct. 20, winning all six singles matches to advance to the second round.

Doubles weren't needed as the Falcons had already won more than the necessary points to clinch the match.

"We knew Wakefield would be a challenge since we played them earlier in the season," coach Kevin Taylor said. "I like the way that we competed in all of our individual matches but in particular, I was pleased at how Laura Williams fought back from being down in the first set to win her match. That's the kind of individual determination you need once you reach the playoffs."

Panther Creek's record year ends at Riverside

The first-ever playoff berth for the Catamounts' young program ended in the first round on Oct. 20 in a 6-3 loss to Durham Riverside.

Panther Creek finished the year 16-4 and notched several program firsts, including wins over Sanderson, Apex and Athens Drive.

“Riverside is very well-coach and I plan on putting them on the schedule for next year so we can get another shot at playing their kind of team,” coach Stephen Solis said. “Just as significant as out on-court success, it was great to see 13 girls all getting along and having fun together for 10 weeks. [I] can't wait for next season.”

East Chapel Hill bounces Athens

After winning a wild-card spot just to get into the playoffs, Athens Drive had a tough drive against perennial power East Chapel Hill. The Lady Jags fell 8-0 to bring their 14-9 season to a close.

Cary Academy loses heartbreaker to Durham Academy

The Lady Chargers (10-12) lost in the first round of the NCISSA 3-A playoffs on Friday by a narrow 5-4 margin.

Cary Academy got wins in two singles matches from Tiffany Williams and Jaclyn Udell, which mean it needed to win all three doubles matches to advance. The Chargers could only muster two out of the three, and ended their season.

Apex not invited after all

When the NCHSAA first released its dual-team girls tennis brackets on Oct. 19, Apex was awarded a wild-card spot and first round match-up with Broughton. However, the brackets were modified later to show that Person County had been awarded the spot.

Apex had tied Athens Drive, which did receive a wild-card spot, in the conference standings with identical records and split head-to-head results. A coin flip gave Athens the first priority for the wild-card. Next, Person was awarded a wild-card ahead of Apex (11-6) as Person finished in sole possession of third place in its conference.
