The Team of Owners Association, comprised of United Soccer League franchises that have mulled the possibility of leaving the league to form their own, will meet this weekend, Carolina RailHawks president Brian Wellman confirms.
The owners' association had met with USL officials last week in New York City. The meeting was called by United States Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati after the USL sent e-mails to players on three of the franchises included in the owner's association (Carolina, Miami and Minnesota). The e-mails said that the players had been released from their contracts as their teams had refused to belong to the USL.
Wellman said the talks had "stabilized" some of the tension surrounding the situation and that it was the first time the new ownership of the USL, which was sold to NuRock Soccer Holdings in late August, met with all the owners of the owners' association under one roof.
Owners from franchises in Miami, Minnesota, Tampa, Atlanta, Montreal, Vancouver, St. Louis and Carolina all make up the team owners association (TOA).
Wellman had said previously that a decision on whether these teams would re-join the USL under its new leadership or form its own league needed to be made quickly. The months of October and November are pivotal in planning for the following year.
An update, Wellman said, should be available sometime early next week.
