Biggest surprise
Everything. There are enough “fastest to reach” milestones to go around and that’s hard to believe when considering players were still being added and dropped even after the season opener. But the RailHawks, which feature 20 new players and a new coaching staff, have meshed better through the first third of this season than last year’s team had by the conclusion of the season.Only eHarmony could’ve matched this year’s personalities better than Rennie and RailHawks management.Brian Plotkin said that each player’s skills and character has led to a cohesive unit.“The quality of player and also the quality of person is very high,” Plotkin said. “The ability for us to come together like that isn’t surprising to us.”The RailHawks are second in the division in goals scored and third in goals allowed.Another surprise is how consistent the results have been despite frequent lineup changes. All but a few players have made at least one start, and Rennie continues to alternate goalkeepers with no substantial drop-off.Biggest disappointment
One Spanish reporter posed the question, “What do you think of the international press saying that United States soccer teams are the cemetary of the greatest stars?” to new signee Marcelo Romero back in February.Romero didn’t waver in his answer, but for intents and purposes, his career was dead on arrival.Indeed, just because you were once good enough to play with David Beckham and Ronaldinho, doesn’t mean you still are. Only the economic stimulus package had more hype and less payoff. The RailHawks paraded out the former La Liga midfielder as the headliner of an offseason full of fresh new faces destined to turn the franchise around. The RailHawks have, thus far, accomplished the latter, but no thanks to the 33-year old Romero, whom the team parted ways with prior to the regular season.Romero, who had suffered devastating knee injuries before coming to Carolina, seemed like an old man trying to hang on to what career he had left and did little to disprove the Spanish reporter’s questioning. Must improve upon
A wise man once said, “If you want to be the man, you’ve got to beat the man.”OK, so it was former pro wrestler Ric Flair, but you get my drift. But so far the RailHawks have a 6-0-0 record against the five bottom-feeding teams and a 1-2-1 record against everyone else. The month of June will provide home contests against Portland and Puerto Rico — two teams vying for the league’s top honors. In order for Carolina to be considered a threat for the league title, it has to either continue the perfect mark against the division dregs or step up when facing a team with a similar league standing.Must continue
Top-notch defensive play. The RailHawks have played one game without defender Jack Stewart, who is out for at least another 6-12 weeks with a broken fibula and so far, have filled the void, and continued holding USL-1 opponents scoreless — a streak now at 396 minutes. An aggressive team like RailHawks is sure to face some counterattack goals, but so far they’ve defied the odds thanks in part to goalkeepers Eric Reed and Caleb Patterson, who have combined for seven shutouts.Rough-housing defender Amir Lowery has been in the league’s top-10 in fouls all year long and isn’t afraid of receiving a card if it sends a message.Moving forward without Stewart will be pivotal to success down the road.Best game
Take your pick of either Cleveland game. The first was a 3-0 road killing, which was as dominant as the team has been in any game this season, while the second was an absolute thriller. In the second, Daniel Palandini, playing in front of the season’s largest crowd of about 5,200 at WakeMed Soccer Park, scored in the 90th minute to win 1-0.Worst game
For sentimental value, it had to be watching two former RailHawks score in their return to Cary when Charleston — which had previously never beaten or tied Carolina — walked out of WakeMed Soccer Park with a 2-1 win.For anyone in orange, watching Frankie Sanfilippo prance and dance after scoring against his own team — he had only scored one goal in two years with the RailHawks — had to have been nauseasted.MVP
Here’s another take-your-pick category. If you were to nominate Paladini, who has seven points in nine games, good enough to be tied in fourth place in the USL-1 as of press time, you’d have a good argument on your hands. But the case can also be made for Mark Schulte. The scorer of this season’s first goal has also played in all 900 minutes for the RailHawks and been the leader of a stellar back line.
