SPRING LAKE — Green Hope golf coach David Allen calls the two-week stretch of the season that features the conference, regional and state championship tournaments “Go Time.”

And going the Falcons are.

After winning the Tri-Eight tournament with an even-par 288 at Bentwinds on April 29, the Falcons shot a one-under 287 on Monday at the NCHSAA 4-A Mideast Regional at Anderson Creek. Green Hope finished comfortably ahead of runner-up Greenville Rose (298) and Northern Durham (301), the other two teams that advanced to the state championship tournament.

“It was nice to come in here and do it for the third straight year, but we’ve got to carry it over to states,” said senior Will Almand, who fought off a nasty cold to shoot an even-par 72.

The 4-A state championship tournament begins with 18 holes on Monday and concludes with 18 more on Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 6. The Falcons are seeking their third straight state championship and fourth in five years. No. 6 was the site of their titles in 2003 and 2006.

On Monday, Green Hope senior Marcus Lindroos carded his team’s best score, coming in at two-under 70. He was one of just five players in the field to break par. Lindroos was even through 13 holes before carding three straight birdies on Nos. 14-16 to move to three-under. A bogey on the Par 5, 533-yard 18th dropped him to two-under for the day.

“I played well today,” said Lindroos, whose round featured six birdies and four bogeys. “I bogeyed the last hole, so that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, but other than that, I played well.”

Brooks Beanland shot an even-par 72, and Michael Cromie finished at one-over 73.

Though their rounds did not count toward the team score, Ben Kohles and Michael Marshburn both played well. Each shot 74. Marshburn was cruising on the front nine, making the turn at three-under par. But he gave all three strokes back with a triple-bogey on No. 10 and played the last eight holes at plus-two.

Green Hope figures to be among the teams to beat at the state championship tournament. The Falcons won every Tri-Eight nine-hole match, plus the 18-hole conference finale this season. They also won all four 18-hole invitationals they entered, plus Monday’s regional championship.

But they’re not ready to settle on all that.

“They’re not satisfied,” Allen said. “They want to do better. It’s a fun team to coach, a privilege.”

Middle Creek’s Jake Colley nabbed an individual qualifying spot for the second year in a row. And like last year, he squeaked through.

At last season’s regional, also held at Anderson Creek, Colley won the final spot on the first playoff hole. This year, he got the berth after shooting one-under 71, edging teammate Nick Troxell and New Bern’s Ben Heisey by one stroke for the final individual spot. Durham Riverside’s Jack Garrett (67) and New Bern’s Forrest Morton (70) got the other two.

Colley played the front nine even and started the back nine off with an eagle on the Par 5 10th. He was one-over over the final eight holes to finish at 71 for the round.

“I had a feeling I was going to be in, but Nick shot 72, and we thought he was going to be on the line,” Colley said.

Apex, the Tri-Eight runner-up, finished seventh with a team score of 308. Andy Knox had the Cougars’ low score, finishing at two-over 74. John Conners (76), Joe McCormick (77) and Zach Oplinger (81) completed their team’s score.

Athens Drive’s Alex Ehlert and Landon Wiggs competed as individuals. Ehlert shot a four-over 76 and Wiggs finished with a 78.
