KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Scott McClellan of Cary outlasted Whit Massey in 37 holes to capture the 92nd Carolinas Amateur Championship at Kiawah Island’s Turtle Point Course on Sunday.

McClellan, 46 and a national sales rep for Premier Warehousing Services, parred his first extra playoff hole to win his first Carolinas Golf Association championship.

In the 36-hole championship, Massey of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., who works at nearby Osprey Point Golf Club, started fast with birdies on the first two holes of the match. He parred his ninth hole of the day to take his largest lead, 2 up.

McClellan fought back on the second nine holes to get the match to all square after the first 18 holes.

In the second round, Massey once again gained a 2-up lead in the middle of the third nine, but failed to maintain his edge. Massey’s lead dwindled, but he held a 1-up lead on the final hole only to pull his tee shot into the water hazard. McClellan won the hole to send the match into extra holes.

McClellan parred the first playoff hole to win his first Carolinas Amateur.

“This is unbelievable,” McClellan said. “What do you think the odds of me winning this championship were? “I was exhausted after the first round this morning. I was hoping I would not fizzle out.”

Reigning champion Paul Simson of Raleigh was defeated in the quarterfinals 2-and-1 by Steve Harwell of Mooresville. Eric Shriver, a former Green Hope High standout who won the medalist qualifier, was also defeated in the quarters — 1-up by Massey.

Also, Brad Dilen of Cary reached the second round on Friday before being ousted. Dilen, who played at Apex High, defeated Tim Tang of North Charleston, S.C., in 20 holes in the opening round and then was eliminated 3-and-1 by Fuller in the second round.
