HOLLY SPRINGS — Nick Hohns has made a lot of big kicks in his career at Holly Springs, but none bigger than Friday night.
The senior nailed a 22-yarder at the buzzer, giving the Golden Hawks a 23-20 comeback win over Tri-Nine 4-A rival Panther Creek on homecoming night.
Hohns had missed his only previous field-goal attempt of the night from 47 yards out, and had a possible winning extra point blocked with 4:01 to go.
“The line and the snapper and the holder did a great job,” Hohns said. “From that distance, I knew if I didn’t fall down and got it off quickly I would hit it.”
Holly Springs is 4-3, 3-1 in conference play, while Panther Creek is 3-3, 1-2.
J.J. Graves scored all three Hawk touchdowns, carrying 20 times for 159 yards, as his team recovered from a 20-7 halftime deficit.
“Our offense isn’t as flashy as theirs, but we just wanted to keep them off the field,” Hawks coach Jim Hynus said. “We beat a quality football team here tonight.”
The Hawks had to overcome some deadly efficiency in the Panther Creek passing game, as Kameron Bryant completed 24 of 28 for 258 yards and three touchdowns.
Total yardage was almost dead even, with 311 yards for the Catamounts and 308 for the Hawks.
“Our passing game was fine,” Catamount coach Wayne Bragg said. “We just didn’t score enough points. It’s a tough one to lose.”
The Hawks scored on their first possession, going 49 yards in five plays. Graves scampered to the right pylon from 18 yards out, with Hohns’ kick making it 7-0 at 7:41.
The Catamounts retaliated on their next drive, going 74 yards in 14 plays to tie it with 40 seconds left in the quarter. Bryant hit Graham Love in the end zone from eight yards out and Walker Cruikshank’s kick tied it with 40 seconds left in the period.
Panther Creek took the lead with 11:15 left in the half, as Jay Townsend out-leaped the defender at the goal line to haul in Bryant’s pass. Cruikshank again added the boot.
The Catamounts went up 20-0 with 30 seconds left in the half, as Isaiah Johnson made an acrobatic one-handed catch inside the 5 to finish a 31-yard pass play.
Holly Springs cut into the lead at 4:25 of the third on a two-yard plunge from Graves. Hohns’ kick made it 20-14.
And it went to 20-20 with 4:01 left on Graves’ 10-yard burst, but Stephen Womble blocked Hohns’ boot.
