DURHAM — Quarterback J.J. Chambers threw for 155 yards and a score, while Josh Williams led a balanced rushing attack with 68 yards and a touchdown, as Durham Jordan pulled away from a pesky Green Hope team 24-14 on Friday night at Claude Currie Stadium in the battle of the Falcons.
Jordan (2-1) struck early when on its first play from scrimmage when Chambers hit a streaking Bradley Sherrod for a 53-yard touchdown for an early 7-0 advantage.
But Green Hope, looking for its first win of the season, got right back in the game with an 11-play, 78-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Drew Lloyd to cut the deficit to 7-6.
The fireworks continued in the second quarter as Jordan embarked on a long 94-yard journey to the end zone, capped by Charles Williams’ 3-yard touchdown burst to give his team a 14-6 advantage.
With just over a minute left in the half, however, Green Hope (0-3) was able tie the game at 14 with a 46-yard pitch-and-catch from Lloyd to wideout Blake Scott and a two-point conversion.
“They are a good team, no matter what the record indicates,” Jordan coach Mike Briggs said about the visiting Falcons. “But we have got to stop shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties.”
Jordan came out inspired in the second half, as junior wideout T.J. Thorpe returned the opening kickoff 61 yards, breaking several tackles in the process. Two plays later, Josh Williams scored on a 5-yard run.
The Jordan offense bended but didn’t break the rest of the way, causing three second half turnovers. They also held Lloyd, who had torched them for 121 yards in the first half, to just one completion for six yards after halftime.
“We had to make a play,” said Juquan Williams, who recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the second half. “The defense just had to step up and get stops for the offense.”
With only a touchdown lead, the game was still in doubt until 1:35 on the clock when kicker Rex Downey booted a 23-yard field goal to seal the game.
Jordan rushed for 213 yards on 33 carries, with five different carriers rushing for at least 30 yards.
