RALEIGH -- There would be no last-second heroics this time for Cary Academy. Ravenscroft took control of Friday night’s TISAC title game midway through the second quarter and wouldn’t let go, cruising to a 70-46 win to claim the TISAC crown.

The Ravens led 16-14 with 6:13 left in the first half, then lowered the boom and never looked back, closing the period on 16-6 run to seize momentum.

“I thought our defense was extraordinary in the second quarter,” said Ravenscroft coach Kevin Billerman. “We moved the ball and didn’t commit turnovers.”

The Ravens also moved the ball inside to their conference player-of-the-year big man, Ryan Kelly. The senior scored 31 points and frustrated the Chargers all night on both ends of the floor.

“It helps they have 6-11 Ryan Kelly and Matt Wilson. They’re big guys and they fought hard,” said Cary Academy coach Kenny Inge. “We fought them but it’s going to wear on us.

“They’re well-coached and they did and they did what they had to do: pound the ball inside.”

The Ravens would start the second half much like they ended the first. After CA cut the lead to eight, Ravenscroft went on a 17-8 run to finish the third period, essentially knocking the wind out of the Chargers.

“I don’t think they’re a better than us altogether, but when it comes down to it, they had more to throw at us,” said Christian-Mical Council. “It’s hard to keep up with a team that keeps throwing and throwing it at you. They have special advantages at they know how to use it well.”

Though it would be the Ravens cutting down the net, the Chargers did receive some good news after the game. Three of their players -- Council, Jimmy Joyner and Cameron Walton -- earned All-TISAC honors.

“They come every night and play hard,” Inge said. “They deserve it.”

At 18-9 overall, Cary Academy will now wait to see if it makes the state tournament. According to Inge, the Chargers could find out Sunday if they’re in.

“We’ve made a good case and we’ll find out,” Inge said. “I think we have a good chance.”
