The Bobby Murray Invitational was scheduled to run Thursday through Saturday last week. But because of uncooperative weather, the 21st annual baseball tournament has been rescheduled to conclude over the course of the next two weekends.

Second round games that were scheduled for last Friday, then rescheduled for Monday, will now be played this Saturday. Third-round games that were originally scheduled for Saturday will now be played on April 19.

“This is the 21st year. We’ve run into a little bit of everything,” said Gary Harris, the tournament’s director. “Typically, [Monday] would’ve been our rainout day, and we’d have been OK. But we’ve done it before over three Saturdays. We’ve always gotten it in and we’re going to get it in this year.”

Apex will play Northern Durham at Millbrook at 10 a.m. Saturday, and Fuquay-Varina and Broughton will follow at 1 p.m. At Wakefield, Green Hope will play Wake Forest-Rolesville at 10 a.m. and Lee County and Wakefield will follow at 1 p.m.

Athens Drive and Leesville Road still have to play their second round game, but it had not been rescheduled at deadline. The Pride already had games scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday this week, and Athens Drive has games scheduled for today (Wednesday) and Friday. Saturday does not appear to be a possibility for Leesville because the school has its prom that night.

Third round games will be determined at the conclusion of the second round based on a series of tiebreakers.

The third-round games will likely be played at Millbrook and Wakefield.

Originally, the bottom eight teams were going to play their final games at Millbrook and Wakefield. The top eight seeds were going to play their third-round games at Five County Stadium in Zebulon. But the tournament cannot go there next weekend because the Carolina Mudcats have home games scheduled. Harris said he would like to bring the tournament to the USA Baseball National Training Complex at Thomas Brooks Park, but that doesn’t appear possible either. The North Carolina baseball team is scheduled to host Boston College in a three-game series at the facility throughout the weekend.

Apex, Athens Drive and Green Hope all won their first games, giving them each a chance to make the championship game.

Apex was a 2-1 winner over Wake Forest-Rolesville at Wakefield on Thursday.

Jake Milinichik allowed one run over six innings to earn the win, and Zach Johnson pitched a perfect seventh inning to get the save. Colt Tingen had an RBI single in the third inning and Trace Allard scored the winning run in the fourth.

In the next game at Wakefield, Green Hope was a 5-1 winner over Northern Durham.

Chris Perry threw a complete game, allowing only one run on three hits, and he had 10 strikeouts. Dylan Kipp went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Falcons, and Eric Brady was 2-for-4, with two RBIs.

Athens Drive won its tournament opener 4-3 against Broughton at Millbrook. Kyle Hathcock pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Jaguars. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Capitals scored three runs on four hits.

Cary, East Wake, Garner, Durham Jordan, Millbrook and Person County are the only teams to have completed their first two games. But none will know what time, where or against whom they will play on April 19 until after the rest of the second-round games are completed this weekend.

Though Cary was able to get its two games in, the Imps were still affected by the weather.

Their game against Millbrook began Thursday but was suspended in the first inning. Play resumed Friday afternoon, and the Imps prevailed 11-4.

Brett Colyer got the win for Cary. Braden Wojciechowski and Nick Kondor had three hits each. Kondor homered, and Patrick Rossi had two hits.

Later Friday, the Imps suffered a 9-1 loss to Person County.

Though the weather has forced tournament organizers to scramble in order to get the games played, Apex coach Mike Valder had a sentiment surely everyone from each of the 16 teams shares.

“We need to play and give our guys some opportunities to continue to get better,” Valder said. “I don’t know anybody, at this point, who would not want to play.”
