Resurrection Lutheran School in Cary held its first science fair May 5, showcasing 68 student projects and exhibits in grades K-7. A panel of qualified judges determined the winners.First place winners were: grades K-3, Grace Henning, “Breathe In, Breathe Out;” grades 4-5, Morgan Matthews, “Does the Scent of Rose Affect Brain Power?” and grades 6-7, Evangeline Lubak, “Memory Madness: Comparison of Boys vs. Girls in Memory Recall.”Second place winners were: grades K-3, Eddie Sanders, “Comparison of Household Cleaners;” grades 4-5, Madeline Lubak, “Sweet Retreat;” grades 6-7, a tie, Andrew Burgess-Wise, “Earthquake Trouble” and Sarah Wygle, “Memory Magic.”Third place prizes went to: grades K-3, McKenzie Crocker, “Pulleys Save Energy;” grades 4-5, a tie, Lindsey Wood and Kristen Leavel, “Electrified Earthworm,” and Jaime Oesterling, “Wind + Water = Science;” grades 6-7, Melanie Moravec, “Comparing the Mouths of Creatures Large and Small.”Special recognition awards were also presented; the Best Budding Scientist award went to kindergartners Shaelyn Kerns for “Some Liquids Are Heavier Than Others” and Anna Porter for “What Kind of Food Do Cats Prefer?” Mary Wygle, third grade, won the Most Original Idea award with her project, “Smarty Cats;” fifth grade student Molly Paul won for Best Display with “Common Aquatic Turtles of N.C. Piedmont;” and sixth-grader Tyler Bradsher won Best Experimental Design for “Bradsher Bridges Falling Down.” Honorable Mention went to seventh-graders Kara Neumann and Abigail Oesterling.
