Two fifth-graders, Erik Salgado, 11, and Andy Hoang, 11, from Salem Elementary School took first place at the 2009 National School Scrabble Championship in Providence, R.I. on April 24-25. Among the words played in the 342-301 final match were: “earners,” “Qi” (a Chinese life force), and “gie” (to give). There were 102 teams of fifth- through eighth-graders competing from all around the nation. This is the first time a North Carolina or fifth grade team has won. In addition to the championship trophy and prizes, Erik and Andy won the grand prize of $10,000 and will be traveling to Los Angeles to appear on the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show.
