Sept. 21: Curriculum Night for tracks 2 and 4, 6-7:30 p.m. Come on over and learn more about your children’s studies. There will be math demonstrations, an overview of a new reading resource, an overview of writing and some hands-on science experiments. Art, PE and music will create an overview of their programs. Atlas International

Atlas School has lots of good news to share! We are changing our name from Atlas Elementary and Preschool to Atlas International School. Briarcliff Elementary

Sept. 15: Briarcliff Family Night at Putt-Putt Center (formerly Funwerks) on Tryon Road in Cary. Join other Briarcliff families to ride go-carts, play rounds of mini golf and many other games.

• Sept. 18 will be an evening of learning for Briarcliff parents. Discover what your children are learning in their classrooms and find out what the PTA will be doing for the 2006-2007 school year. An information meeting for parents of AG students in grades 4-5 will be held in room 402 from 5 to 5:30 p.m. The PTA will hold its first open meeting of the year from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Finally, the school will host an open house where parents can attend one of two sessions: 6:05-6:45 p.m. or 6:50-7:30 p.m.

• It’s never too early to start planning for Briarcliff’s biggest event — the Fall Festival, Oct. 27 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Lots of volunteers are needed to assist with games, other activities and food booths. We also need help setting up and breaking down. Those interested in volunteering should contact Deanna Wilson at deewilson@nc.rr.com. Please be on the lookout for more information in upcoming Tuesday take-home folders.

• The Briarcliff Spirit Booth is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 to 8:25 a.m. and located next to the Music Room. Students and parents can purchase pens, pencils and other “cool” school desk items. Spirit Wear will be available to purchase on the last Wednesday of each month. Parents who would like to volunteer at the Spirit Booth can contact the school at 460-3443.

Carpenter Elementary

Sept. 16: School Spirit and fundraiser at Jellybeans, 5:15-7 p.m. $5 per person.

Oct. 19: Carpenter Spirit Family Picnic, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Bring your own picnic dinner and drinks. Blankets or chairs are recommended. Come have fun and get to know your school community. Rain date is Oct. 26.

Cary Academy

On Sept.11, Middle School students participated in the Pinwheels for Peace project. Students made and decorated pinwheels as part of the “whirled” peace art installment. Students were encouraged to think about what peace means to them, including feelings about tolerance, cooperation, harmony, unity or simply peace of mind. Students wrote their thoughts about peace on their pinwheels and then planted all 302 in the circle in front of the Middle School. In September 2005, about a half-million pinwheels were displayed in over 1,000 locations throughout the world, according to www.pinwheelsforpeace.com.

• On Sept. 1 the entire seventh grade and its advisors went bowling at Buffaloe Lanes in Cary as part of a class bonding activity.

Farmington Woods Elementary

An important part of the IB program is taking “action” to help others. Maggie Dell, a student in grade 2, and Mrs. Mukherjee, a fourth-grade teacher, took action by donating their long hair to “Locks for Love.”

• Farmington Woods Elementary invites parents and families to exciting events in September. A PTA Meeting and Open House will be held on Thursday night, Sept. 14. A general PTA meeting will be followed by two identical half-hour sessions where classroom teachers will talk about curriculum expectations for the 2006-2007 school year.

• Mark your calendar! Fall pictures will be taken on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Dress your children in bright colors and send them off with a smile.

• The PTA Fall Fundraiser is going on now at Farmington Woods. See Farmington Woods’ students/parents if you would like to purchase beautiful holiday paper and other items.

Holly Springs Elementary

• Now is the time to link your store discount cards to earn money for our school when you do your shopping. You can link your Harris Teeter VIC card or your Food Lion MVP card online or at the store. A flyer will be coming home with the information to link your Kroger card. You can also link your Target credit card to earn money for the school.

• Bring in old cell phones, used ink cartridges and empty 20-ounce soda bottles to school. These are recycled and earn funds for student technology.

• Thanks so much to all the parents who have joined the PTA already this year. We had a great response at the Meet the Teacher Day and during the first week of school. If you haven’t joined already, a membership flyer will be coming home in your child’s Friday Folder. Also, you can access the membership form from the PTA link on the HSES Web site.

Olive Chapel Elementary

An informational meeting will be held for parents of fourth-grade students in the Academically Gifted Program, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 9:15 a.m. in room 513. This information will be repeated on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 6 p.m. in the media center.

• Constitution Day will be celebrated at Olive Chapel on Monday, Sept. 18. This date marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. The Student Council will recognize the event on the morning news show and students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue that day to school.

• PTA Open House at Olive Chapel Elementary will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 20. Kindergarten, first-, and second-grade parents will meet with the teachers from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and parents of third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students will meet with teachers from 7 to 8 p.m. An introduction of the PTA Board and brief board meeting will be shown on the video during the time in the classrooms.

Penny Road Elementary

Sept. 19: The PTA’s second general member meeting is being held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the media center. All Penny Road parents and teachers are welcomed and encouraged to attend. The main purpose of PTA meetings is to inform Board members and parents about PTA-sponsored events at our school.

The Raleigh School

Mr. Sather’s third-grade class will visit Historic Oak View Park and Raleigh City Museum on Thursday, Sept. 14. These are two of several sites the students will visit to learn about Raleigh’s history and landmarks.

• Author and illustrator Jon Berkeley will visit the third, fourth and fifth graders on Sept. 15. Mr. Berkeley is author of the new children’s book, The Palace of Laughter, which is the first book in The Wednesday Tales series. Berkeley lives in Barcelona, Spain.

• Both fifth-grade classes will participate in a team-building ropes course at Bond Park in Cary on Wednesday, Sept. 20. They will enjoy a picnic lunch afterwards.

• The Raleigh School’s Diversity Committee will host a Multicultural Festival on Thursday, Sept. 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on campus. It will be an evening for Raleigh School families and friends to enjoy food, stories and music from around the world. Storyteller and musician David DiGiuseppe will perform at 6:15 p.m.
