Cary Academy
• A three-student team from Cary Academy took first place in its division at the American Computer Science League All-Star Contest in Huntsville, Ala., May 22-24.
Cary Academy’s team of Jason Chow (’10), Jeffrey Dudek (’11) and Allen Yang (’12) competed in two rounds: team programming and individual written. All worked for almost three hours and earned a perfect 40/40 on the four programs they were assigned. On the written round, each tied with a score of 10/12. This total written score, combined with a perfect programming round, won Cary Academy first place in its division. For their written performances, all three students won book awards, as well as first-place plaques for the team finish. Cary Academy also received a team plaque and the grand prize of a digital notebook.
• Upper School Spanish teacher Vic Quesada has been awarded the North Carolina State University “Inspirational Teacher Award” to recognize excellence in high school teachers in the United States. Teachers are nominated by NCSU freshmen each fall and awards are given during the spring semester. Stewart Gordon (’08), an AP language class and Spanish literature student of Quesada’s, nominated him. Quesada received a thank-you letter from NCSU and a copy of the nominating letter by Gordon.Cary Homeschoolers
Cary Homeschoolers Student Showcase will be Saturday, June 6, from 2-3:30 p.m. at Middle Creek Community Center, 123 Middle Creek Park Ave., Cary. CHS families will be displaying samples of their work, including representations from many ages and a variety of disciplines as well as curricula, favorite books and videos, art projects, science experiments, lapbooks, photo albums, crafts and much more. Cary Homeschoolers invite families and friends, anyone interested in seeing what other homeschooling families are doing, families considering homeschooling as an educational alternative, plus anyone who wants a better idea of the tangible results of a year of homeschooling, to come to this free event.St. Mary Magdalene
- The students at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School in Apex recently participated in a walk-a-thon to earn money for different charities. The students in the school, ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade, collected donations and walked laps to earn them. The Monarch Leadership in Service Ministry group (comprised of 7th and 8th graders) selected four charities to benefit from the donations. They raised approximately $8,000 and divided it among the Wake County SPCA, Habitat for Humanity, Embrace Uganda, and Stop Hunger Now.
