Athens Drive High School
• Congratulations to the following students who received awards at the juried Congressional Art Show last Sunday at the N.C. Museum of Art: Allison Spencer for second place; Rose Isadore for the judge’s special merit award and Lydia Neal, Amy Millard and Olivia Kline for honorable mention.
• Congratulations to ADHS seniors Zainab Abdus-Saboor, Jennifer Dutton, Carla Hutchins and Kameron Rowe, who have been named North Carolina Teaching Fellows. The scholarships provide $6,500 per year for four years to a N.C. college in return for four years of teaching in the N.C. public schools.
• 118 ADHS staff, students and parents donated 95 pints of blood at the annual Athens/Rex blood drive on campus. The event was organized by Debbie Wagner, ADHS Med Science Academy director. The donated blood will help 285 patients, according to Carol Doyle of Rex Health.

Cary Academy
• Joshua Henderson (’15) is a recent winner in the American Fine Arts Festival Concerto Competition, a national youth concerto competition. As a result, he has been invited to perform May 23 at Carnegie Hall at Weil Recital Hall. He will perform the third movement, Allegro Assai, from the violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor by Johann Bach.
• On May 2, three Middle School orchestra students played with the Eastern Regional All State Orchestra in Swansboro. The three All State orchestra members are: Andrew Kenyon (’15), Joshua Henderson (’15) and Emily Aaron (’13).
• The seniors in the Class of 2009 have been busy making college choices. The 103 graduating seniors received offers of admission from over 140 colleges and universities in 20 states in the U.S. Ultimately, the students decided to attend 47 different colleges. Approximately half will stay in the Tar Heel state. The others will head out across the U.S. to California, Arizona, Minnesota, Massachusetts, New York, Texas and more. In addition to the offers of admission, seniors reported being offered nearly $3.5 million in scholarship awards.
• Freshman Allen Yang won a certificate, book award and a $300 “Art of Problem Solving” scholarship at the 31st Annual State Mathematics Competition.

Hopewell Academy
• “Masterpieces Past, Present, for the Future Art Show and Sale,” benefiting the David R. Collins Fund for Creative Arts, will be Thursday, May 28, at 7 p.m. The suggested donation is $25. Faculty, parents, friends of Hopewell and guest are invited to attend. RSVP to odom@hopewellacademy.org.
• Open House for prospective parents is Tuesday, May 26, at 7 p.m. RSVP by calling 607-6339 or visit hopewellacademy.org.

Northwoods Elementary
Stephanie Jabusch was recently chosen as the 2009 PTA Volunteer of the Year. Jabusch has volunteered at Northwoods for over 10 years, as each of her three children have attended the school. She has served on the PTA Board, been a room parent several times and headed mulitple committees at the school. A permanent fixture at all school events, Jabusch has most recently been responsible for the school yearbook.

Panther Creek High School
Football information meeting for rising freshman will be Tuesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Incoming freshmen and their parents are invited to meet with Coach Bragg to hear about summer workouts and mini-camps, register to receive e-mails and tour the football facilities. Current players and team parents will be on hand to help answer your questions.

Substitute Teachers Association
The Substitute Teachers Association of Wake County will hold a general meeting on Thursday, May 21 from 5-7 p.m. at the NCAE Wake County Office at 3900 Merton Drive, Suite 100, Raleigh. Agenda will include the swearing in of new officers for 2009-2011. All substitute teachers are welcome.
