Apex High
• When you shop in a Barnes & Noble on Monday, April 27, and Tuesday, April 28, a percentage of purchases may be donated to the school. Cafe purchases, music, DVDs and books all benefit the school. Student art work will be on display, an AHS quartet will entertain and a children’s storytime will be provided. Be sure to tell the cashier at the register you’re buying for the AHS fair.
• Many volunteer opportunities are available to help stage the 29th Annual Peak Fest held on Salem Street in downtown Apex. Volunteers are needed between 5:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. for two to four hour shifts. To secure a volunteer position contact The Apex Chamber of Commerce at 362-6456 or visit the office at 220 North Salem St., Apex.

Athens Drive High School
• ADHS student Jeong-Hwan Na was recently recognized by the WCPSS School Board during the Spotlight on Students program. Enrolling in Athens after leaving Korea, he had to adjust to a new country and school without his extended family and friends. He is an outstanding student and ambassador for ADHS, proving that hard work and persistence have made him a productive citizen who meets challenges.
• Congratulations to our German students who competed in the statewide German Day competition at UNC recently. First place in the advanced level team went to Anna Piroth, Margo Jordan and Rick Kocher. First place in 2-D Art competition went to Margo Jordan. Allison Spence received first place in photography competition and second place in 2-D Art competition.
• To all rising ninth-graders who will be attending ADHS: Registration is now open for Freshmen Camp in August. Visit the ADHS Web site to register.

Hopewell Academy
• Congratulations to March’s Students of the Month: 10th-grader Devin Brooks, son of Bob and Laurisa Brooks of Cary; eighth-grader Kathleen Dougherty, daughter of Charlie and Shannon Dougherty of Cary and fifth-grader Austin Edge, son of Monty and Amy Edge of Morrisville.

Penny Road Elementary
- The public is invited to attend the Penny Road Spring Carnival on April 24 from 5-8:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for kids 3 years and over. Adults are free.

St. Michael School
• Four St. Michael students were honored at Meredith College as state winners in the annual Young Authors Writing Contest sponsored by the International Reading Association. The poems and essays of seventh-graders Celia Burger, Catherine Graff, Emily Lutz and Bridget Mulhern were published in the Raleigh-Wake Reading Council’s 2009 book, “Bridges of Understanding.” Original artwork by students Christina Donovan, Sam Hamashima, Savannah Lips, Hannah Moore, Camille Munoz, Morgan Reid and Connor Rich also were featured in the book, with Emily Lutz’s drawing selected for the cover, and Shannon Thompson’s artwork for the title page.
• A team of eighth-graders traveled to a special baseball “field of dreams” in Cary to help with Opening Day games at the Miracle League of the Triangle. Wearing their bright orange StMS sweatshirts, the students worked one-on-one with youths facing physical and mental disabilities such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and autism.

WAKE COUNTY SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
There will be a general meeting for all Wake County substitute teachers on Thursday, April 23, 5-7 p.m. at Hope Community Church, 821 Buck Jones Road, Cary. Dinner begins at 5 p.m. $8 includes tax and tip. Annual dues $10. RSVP to Janet Conner at 467-6723.
