Apex High
• Many volunteer opportunities are available to help stage the 29th Annual Peak Fest held on Salem Street in downtown Apex. Volunteers are needed between 5:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. for two to four hour shifts. To secure a volunteer position contact The Apex Chamber of Commerce at 362-6456 or visit the office located at 220 North Salem St., Apex.
• Baccalaureate for the Class of 2009 is scheduled for Sunday, June 7 at 3 p.m. at New Horizons Fellowship in Apex.

Athens Drive High School
• Congratulations to Kim Zapko who has been awarded the Centennial Scholarship at the NCSU College of Textiles. The scholarship, valued at $47,500, is awarded each year. Last year’s winner was another ADHS student, Monica Matthai.
• ADHS student Jeffrey Kim has been selected to attend the 2009 Governor’s School. This is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation.
• Reminder to all rising ninth graders who will be attending ADHS: Registration is now open for Freshmen Camp in August. Visit the ADHS Web site to register.

Cary Academy
On April 1, the economics team competed in the North Carolina Economics Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank in Charlotte. The team placed second, losing in the final round to a team from the North Carolina School of Science and Math. CA won its part of the competition, centered on microeconomics, then held on to second place during the rounds concerning macroeconomics and international trade, but lost the final-round quiz bowl. Team members are: Jacob Barish (’09), Jackie Bennett (’09), Nick Kisley (’09) and Bill Wagner (’09).

Davis Drive Middle
Congratulations MathCounts Team: The Davis Drive MathCounts team came in second overall in the state competition. They competed against 51 other middle schools and home schools. Remy Lee placed second overall, individually earning him a spot in the national competition in May in Orlando. Tony Li came in eighth, Justin Luo was 22nd and Jin Yoon was 44th.

Hopewell Academy
Open House for prospective parents is Tuesday, April 28 at 7 p.m. RSVP by calling 607-6339 or visit hopewellacademy.org.

Middle Creek Elementary
Spring Carnival, April 18, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Come for some “Big Top” - themed fun with Hubba Bubba the Clown. Food, cake walk, raffle baskets and silent auction. Admission is $8 per child, adults and children under 2 are free. Admission includes popcorn, games with prizes, trackless train ride, inflatable slide and bounce house. Rain or shine.

Penny Road Elementary
Kindergarten Orientation will be held on April 16 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Parents and their rising kindergarteners are invited to attend this very informative session and take a tour of the school. The public is invited to attend the Penny Road Spring Carnival on April 24 from 5-8:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for kids 3 years and over. Adults are free.

Reedy Creek Middle
Guy Blanc, sixth grade, placed fifth in the 2009 State Mathematics Contest. Guy will compete in the State Mathematics Contest Finals on April 30. The State Mathematics Contest was initiated in 1979 to provide state-level competition in comprehensive mathematics for those students who excelled in regional contests.

St. Michael School
Fifty-one eighth graders and six teachers recently completed a three-day field trip to Washington, D.C., where their studies in history and government, as well as a unit on the Holocaust and the novel “Night,” came together.
