Mid-week messThe Wake school board is at it again. They plan to release students an hour early every Wednesday beginning in July to help increase planning time for teachers.Letters were sent out back in February notifying all parents with children in the Wake County School System that for two years in a row the school district missed adequate yearly progress targets for math and reading in all levels, elementary, middle and high school. We have a school system more concerned about themselves and their perceptions than the children and parents they serve. How much more instability do they want to inflict into the days of the students and their families? We have had an attempt at forced year-round, forced busing, new districting and elimination of magnet schools. In the middle of the week change the school schedule. You will have people forgetting it is Wednesday and being late to pick their children up, bus schedules in a state of disarray and never mind the after-school programs. How about a new approach? Renegotiate with the Teacher’s Union instead and add an hour to the teacher’s day!Marguerite Greene, Fuquay-VarinaWhere’s Easter?I’m not sure the best way to get my opinion out there, but I’m sure there are those who share it: Am I the only one offended by the sign in front of Bond Park that says “Egg Hunt”? Why do they feel the need to leave off the most important reason behind the hunt — Easter! It’s obvious that the egg hunt is scheduled for this particular time because of the traditional Easter Egg hunts. If they are so worried about offending someone, then perhaps they need to schedule an egg hunt at some random time not associated with Easter. In trying not to offend anyone, I am personally offended. And I can pretty much guarantee I’m not alone. I’ve been in this area a long time, which is rare. Going on almost 30 years. It saddens me to see organizations going out of their way to remove all religious connections to traditions. This world would be a much better place if everyone would get back to the basic beliefs and stop worrying so much about offending.Karen Williams, Cary
