A Cary man faces charges for a string of burglaries.

Cleveland Fernando Birdsong, 42, of 108 Laskey Court, was charged early Friday in connection with five commercial burglaries. In each case a window or door was broken to gain entry.

“We’re very pleased to get him,” said Capt. Michael Williams of the Cary Police Department.

Cary police had released information, including surveillance footage, last week about a burglary at Hot Point Deli, 1248 Buck Jones Road on June 21.

“We got some good information on that,” Williams said.

About 10:30 p.m. Thursday police were dispatched to two burglaries in the Shoppes of Kildaire shopping center at Sheer Elegance, 165 S.E. Cary Parkway and 157 S.E. Cary Parkway. Two more burglaries were phoned in just after midnight Friday at Marble Slab Creamery, 2476 Walnut St. and Great Clips, 2342 Walnut St.

“We had officers immediately in the area,” Williams said.

Birdsong, on a motor scooter, fled from a traffic stop and rode for a block on Walnut Street. When he attempted a U-turn, he struck the rear end of an unmarked police vehicle that caused minor damage to the vehicle. The scooter was wrecked shortly thereafter when Birdsong attempted to jump a curb.

Birdsong was charged with five counts of breaking and entering, felony larceny, felony speeding to elude a police officer and a host of misdemeanor traffic offenses.

Williams said that Birdsong could be connected to as many as 31 crimes committed since November.
