The Morrisville Town Council discussed a budget amendment ordinance at their March 10 meeting, which could result in scaled-down versions of some of the town’s biggest events, while cancelling others altogether.

The amendment aims to cut this fiscal year’s budget by $2,790,678.

One of the casualties may be “A Day in the Park,” the annual summer fair that many consider to be Morrisville’s biggest event of the year. To cut costs, it could be abridged to an evening function with fireworks, but without rides or games.

Some parks and recreation events may be removed, like the senior citizen’s “Evening in Vegas” and the spring pool party.

Other items on the chopping block include all remaining equipment upgrades, professional training and associated travel and employee recognition programs.

Stacie Galloway, the town’s public information officer, said that the budget amendment isn’t a last-minute revelation. At the end of last year, staff started to strategize in response to slowing revenues, stalled development-generated fees and recession-laced sales tax distributions.

The council is set to vote on the ordinance March 24.
