SHAKESPEARE PLAY

Bare Theatre presents "The Taming of the Shrew" by William Shakespeare at the Holly Springs Cultural Arts Center at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. This version is set in modern corporate America, pitting the ambitious, hard-headed Petruchio against the stubborn shrew, Katherine. SHRED-A-THON

Shred-It, N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper and Goodwill Industries will be sponsoring a shred-a-thon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Crossroads Plaza on Walnut Street in Cary. The event will allow participants to destroy old tax records, checks, employment records or credit applications. PERSONAL FINANCE

Infinity Ballet Theatre will present "Peter and the Wolf" at the Halle Cultural Art Center at 2:15 p.m. Children can participate in face painting and crafts offered by Camp MusArt prior to the narrated performances. Activities begin at 12:45 p.m. Tickets cost $5 per person for the performance and $2 for face painting and crafts. Westwood Baptist Church will host its annual flu shot clinic in coordination with Community Service Day. The clinic will be in the fellowship hall at 200 Westhigh St. in Cary. Volunteers for Community Service Day can begin getting shots at 8 a.m. Church members can start arriving at 9 a.m. and non-church members are invited to join at 10 a.m. The clinic will close at noon. Without insurance, the cost is $30 for flu shots and $42.50 for pneumonia shots. Pneumonia shots are given every 10 years. Insurance plans that are accepted are Medicare (Part B), Partners, Aetna, Humana Gold. BOTTLE CAP JEWELRY

The Capital Quilters Guild will hold its second annual Quilt Auction at Historic Oak View County Park on Wake County Heritage Day. The park is on Carya Road in Raleigh. More than 80 hand-made quilts will be on display inside and outside the historic farmhouse from 10 a.m. until the auction begins at 2 p.m. Bidders can register for the auction between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Advance bids will be accepted from those who won't be present at 2 p.m. A boutique of smaller items will open at 10 a.m. and raffle tickets for the "Country Village" quilt will be sold. A Red Cross babysitter training class runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3700 Regency Parkway in Cary. The course teaches basic care, first aid, emergency actions skills and safe play. CARY DIWALI

The Cary Diwali Festival, presented by Hum Sub and the town of Cary, kicks off at 11 a.m. Diwali, the festival of lights, is the most popular of all the festivals from India and is celebrated worldwide. Last year's festival drew more 12,000 people. This year, festivities run until 8 p.m. at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary. For more information, visit humsub.net. Hum Sub is a nonprofit cultural organization dedicated to promoting greater awareness of Indian culture and heritage.

ALTERED BOOK CRAFT

CARY AREA EMS FREE FLU CLINIC

Cary Area Emergency Medical Services will be offering a free flu clinic starting at 8 a.m. and until the vaccine is no longer available. The vaccine is not for the H1N1 strain, but for this year's flu strain. In the past two years the vaccine was finished by 11 a.m. The clinic will be at Cary Area EMS, 107 Medcon Court, north of the intersection of Maynard Road and Kildaire Farm Road.
