Are you one of a growing number of people somewhat confused by the term “living green?” Are you aware of how to achieve healthy living, a healthy home and healthy planet?

Terrible Creek Executive Retreat & Eco-Center in Fuquay-Varina will hold its Inaugural Summer Solstice Celebration on Saturday, June 20.

“I presented my ideas to Fuquay-Varina town government officials who believed in my plan, dedicated to providing education and activities on healthy home, healthy living and healthy planet,” said owner Stephanie Ashworth, a graduate of the School of Human Ecology at Cornell University. “They felt it would be an asset to the community.”

The center is located on 10 acres of lush, verdant property complete with bee hives. The solar family home designed by Ashworth will serve as the meeting place for businesses and groups to gather. Ashworth, an environmental analyst, designed the house with reclaimed and antique building materials in 1983. She and her daughters moved in during Christmas 1985. The spacious house features heirloom pieces of furniture.

At the kick-off event, many local notables in the energy field such as Paul Alexander of SolarPlex-US and Jason Epstein of Baker Renewable Energy will be on hand to acquaint visitors with information relative to renovating, remodeling and repairing your home to live a greener, healthier life affordably.

A longtime beekeeper and member of the Wake County Beekeepers Association, Ashworth will discuss starting your own beehive. Also appearing will be Todd Dumke of Eastern Carolina Organics.

The barn will serve as the stage for the presentations and demonstrations by professionals such as Karen Bernard, who will address the benefits of massage, and Marina Lando, who will explain Reiki. Also on hand, meet naturopath Maurice Werness, N.D.

Organic cooking and gardening are on the roster as well.

Themes will focus on family-friendly fun for adults and children. Music and face painting will enhance the day’s activities, and the pond is ready for fly fishing and kayaking.

“People want to become informed but seem to still be afraid of what living green is all about,” said Angela Coulter of About Face Marketing. “There is much information floating out there about how to be environmentally responsible, but not enough people know how to understand and apply it to their lifestyle. You can start with you, by incorporating changes in your life to reduce the negative impact on our environment.”

Ashworth is developing partnerships with local hotels and recreational facilities to further enhance the center.

On Friday, June 19, the facility will be open from noon to 5 p.m. by appointment only to individuals interested in using the site for business meetings and events.
