State authorities and the Cary police are looking into the shooting of a man by a Cary officer early Sunday morning.
Police had responded to a call that someone was having a mental-health crisis on Dundalk Way in southwest Cary when the shooting took place.
According to the News & Observer, the man shot is Jimmie Cummings, 31. As of Monday afternoon Cummings was in intensive care at WakeMed Cary Hospital.
The News & Observer reported that officers tried to subdue or calm Cummings for about 20 minutes when he went into the kitchen where a BB weapon was kept. Witnesses said they could not see Cummings but saw officers draw their weapons and yelled for the officers not to shoot.
The State Bureau of Investigation along with the professional standards team of the Cary Police Department are investigating the incident, said Capt. Mike Williams of the Cary police.
Such investigations are standard when a weapon is used, Williams said.
Because of the investigation, police are not releasing the name of the officer involved or details of the incident, Williams said.
Williams said he did not know how long the reviews would take.
“We hope to wrap it up as soon as possible but take enough time to investigate as thoroughly as possible,” Williams said.
Williams said use of a weapon is rare in his 17 years of experience.
“I would say there have been less than five occurrences in which we have fired a weapon in a situation such as this,” Williams said.
