FUQUAY-VARINA - Fuquay rehab wins award

Two Fuquay-Varina women will receive a historical preservation award for helping to restore a post office that operated in the town in the early 1900s.

Shirley Simmons and Frances Senter get the Anthemion Award for Preservation Leadership on Tuesday in Raleigh. The Fuquay Springs Quester Chapter 1134, the town and Old North State Renovations will share the honor for the $16,000 renovation.

The one-room post office, which was run by postmistress Hattie Parker Jones from 1902 to 1913, was used as storage by the Jones family before they gave it to the rehab group in 2006. It originally sat on Depot Street and was moved several times until the town agreed to move to the historical preservation area between South Fuquay Avenue and Aiken Street.

The Quester chapter held barbeque dinners and solicited donations for the renovation, part of which went towards $3,000 in historical furnishings to reflect the early 1900s. The post office opened in June as a museum and is operated by volunteers.

Genesys to cut staff

Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories, which employs 29 at a Morrisville office, plans to cut four software engineers.

The California company will try to find other jobs within Genesys for the affected employees. If that doesn't happen, the employees will be terminated Oct. 21, according to its Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter sent to the N.C. Department of Commerce.

Genesys makes software for businesses' customer-service centers. It has been a division of the French corporation Alcatel-Lucent since 2000.

Donnelley seeks online riches

Yellow pages publisher R.H. Donnelley, which is restructuring its business after filing for bankruptcy in May, continues to beef up its online offerings as it fights for advertising dollars.

The Cary company gets the bulk of its revenue from its print directories, but its online offering is becoming increasingly important as advertisers shift their advertising away from traditional media.

Last month, Donnelley, which publishes directories under the Dex brand name in 28 states, introduced new features to its online yellow pages, DexKnows.com, that will help make it easy for advertisers to respond online to ratings and reviews posted by consumers.

The company also is teaming up with Tribune Media Services to offer movie data -- show times, reviews and other information -- for films shown at more than 6,000 theaters nationwide.

Donnelley also recently expanded the availability of online replicas of its paper telephone directories, for consumers who prefer the look, if not the feel, of traditional directories to all of its markets across the country.

Donnelley expects to emerge from bankruptcy early next year, and the moves signal that the company is forging ahead with efforts to boost revenue in the interim.

Cornerstone deal gets OK

Cornerstone Therapeutics received the go-ahead to acquire the antibiotic Factive for $5 million in cash.

Cary-based Cornerstone received bankruptcy court approval to acquire Factive, which last year generated $16 million in sales.

The seller, Oscient Pharmaceuticals of Massachusetts, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July.

Factive, which is used for respiratory ailments, has been available in the U.S. market since 2004.

Its patent protection extends to 2018, according to Cornerstone.

Cornerstone has 140 employees.

It was created last year when Cary's Cornerstone BioPharma acquired Critical Therapeutics of Boston.

The company posted a profit of $1.7 million on sales of $25 million in the second quarter.
