Turnips for Turnip-haters

2 tablespoons oil

1/2 cup onion diced

2-3 cloves garlic, minced

4 cups chicken broth

1 big or 2 small meaty ham hocks, (can substitute 1 smoked turkey leg)

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or to taste)

5 or 6 small turnips, peeled and diced

1 potato, peeled and diced

6 cups loosely packed chopped, mixed greens (kale, turnip, young collards, radish tops)

Heat oil in soup pot. Add onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes; add garlic sauté 30 seconds until onion is translucent and garlic is soft. Add broth, meat and pepper. Bring to boiling, then reduce heat and simmer, covered for 30 minutes. Remove meat. Add turnips and potatoes. While vegetables are cooking, remove meat from bone and set aside. When potatoes and turnips are soft, add greens and reserved meat. Cook until greens are tender.
