Local students serve as pages
Hayley Hillison, Riley Pearson, Martina Savage, Jason Cole Shallcross and Wesley Smith served as pages for the N.C. House of Representatives. Hayley, the daughter of Jeffery and Michelle Hillison of Cary, was sponsored by Rep. Thom Tillis. Riley, the son of Donald and Robin Pearson of Fuquay-Varina, was sponsored by Rep. Paul Stam. Martina, the daughter of Larry and Zora Savage of Cary, was sponsored by Rep. Edgar Starnes. Jason, the son of Jason and Yvette Shallcross of Cary, was sponsored by Rep. Ruth Samuelson. Wesley, the son of Gordon and Terri Smith of Cary, was sponsored by Rep. Andy Wells.
Rotary group presents vocational awards
The Cary Central Rotary Club presented this years Vocational Awards to Al Badger of Ashworth Drugs in Cary and J.R. Maye of Atlantic Tire & Service in Cary.
Cary resident completes U.S. Navy basic training
Navy Seaman Recruit Makayla Dunman completed U.S. Navy Basic Training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. She studied naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety. She is the daughter of Javon and Candy Dance of Cary.
Cary Girl Scouts earn Silver Awards
Amulya Gorti and Zoe Moore earned their Silver Awards, the second-highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Amulya and Zoe made a peer-to-peer program for the prevention of bullying, self-harm and suicide. They created a presentation for schools, a video and pamphlets.
Amanda Gullerud of Cary earned the Silver Award. She painted portraits of Lucille Ball, Helen Lewis, Rosa Parks and Sally Ride and wrote short biographies of each woman. The project will be displayed at West Cary Middle School. Amanda is the daughter of Andrea Gullerud.
Cary resident earns International Book Awards
Brenda Schnable of Cary won Best Cover Design in the nonfiction category of the International Book Awards and was a finalist, in the top three, of the Health: Alternative Medicine category.
Fuquay-Varina teenagers earn Venturing Gold awards
Ginny Bedwell, Stephen Bedwell, Alex Collier and Aaron Cross of Venturing Crew 75 in Fuquay-Varina earned Venturing Gold awards. They served as staff at the Camp Durant summer camp and planned two crew activities, including a trip to the Outer Banks. They led a Merit Badge Experience in the fall and won first- and second-place titles in a regional Venturing event.
