The Pantry makes Fortune list

The Pantry, a convenience store chain based in Cary, made the latest Fortune 500 list of the nation’s largest companies.

The company ranked No. 371 in this year’s list, down from No. 347 a year ago. The rankings by Fortune magazine are based on revenue and include both publicly traded companies and privately held companies that file financial statements with a government agency.

Durham-based Quintiles, the world’s largest pharmaceutical services company, was the only other company based in the Triangle to make the list. Quintiles cracked the list for the first time, ranking No. 486.

Retail giant Wal-Mart retained its hold on the No. 1 spot. Its revenue totaled $473.1 billion – nearly one-half trillion dollars.

Altogether, 13 North Carolina-based companies made the list, led by Bank of America, which ranked No. 21.

Other North Carolina companies on the list: Lowe’s, No. 52; Duke Energy, No. 123; Nucor, No. 150; V.F. Corp., No. 241; BB&T, No. 269; Family Dollar Stores, No. 271; Sonic Automotive, No. 309; Reynolds American, No. 329; Laboratory Corp. of America, No. 440; and Lorillard, No. 496.
