Cardinal Gibbons adds another 3A NCHSAA tennis title

CorrespondentMay 19, 2014

— Cardinal Gibbons made it four state titles in a row at the N.C. High School Athletic Association boys dual-team tennis championships on Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Gibbons defeated Marvin Ridge High (Waxhaw, N.C.) 6-0 to claim the 3A title

It is their eighth state crown in the past nine years. Cardinal Gibbons was the 3A runner-up in its first year of 3A play in 2010 after taking four consecutive 2A titles.

Cardinal Gibbons (25-4) claimed a 3A triple crown for the second straight year by adding the state team title to go with state 3A individual singles and doubles titles won by Crusaders last week.

Gibbons senior Robert Kelly, the 3A state singles champion, defeated Marvin Ridge’s George Lovitt in the individual semifinals last week. Kelly beat Lovitt for the team title on Saturday, 6-2, 6-4.

In other matches, Matt Galush topped John Hatala, 6-1, 6-2; Jim Mantyh defeated Avanish Madhavaram, 6-2, 6-3; Brody Chapman eliminated Hayden Wohlfarth, 6-4, 6-3; Kyler Zadell won over Andrew Viditz-Ward, 7-5, 6-0; and Kyle Fitzgerald beat Michael Kronovet, 6-3, 6-3.
