Athens Drive’s Markeisha Gatling shoots in the third round of the 2010 NCHSAA 4A girls basketball playoffs. This was Gatling’s final high school game, a 65-49 loss at Enloe.

Athens Drive High alumna and N.C. State center Markeisha Gatling had her dream come true on April 14 when she was chosen in the first round of the WNBA draft at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Gatling, who under new coach Wes Moore led the Wolfpack to its first NCAA berth in four seasons, was chosen by the Chicago Sky with the 10th pick.

Gatling, who transferred from Gulf Coast Community College after her sophomore season, was the first N.C. State player drafted since 2008.

A powerful 6-foot-5 All-ACC center, she averaged 17.4 points and 7.2 rebounds this season, and shot 66.3 percent from the floor.

“This has been a dream of mine since I began playing basketball when I was 9 years old,” Gatling said. “Just to be here and go through all this … is just amazing!”
