Softball: Middle Creek 13, Holly Springs 0

Mustangs roll past Hawks, keeps their season goals high

— Middle Creek has higher goals this softball season, and the proof is in the postgame.

The Mustangs had just pieced together a dominating performance, yet Mustangs coach Robbie Wray talked to his players about being more patient at the plate and other minor fixes.

This was after a 13-0, five-inning victory at Southwest Wake Athletic Conference foe Holly Springs. Middle Creek allowed just one Holly Springs baserunner in the first four four innings of play and cranked out a total of 16 hits at the plate.

“They’re starting to see what the potential is,” Wray said.

What worked: Middle Creek (6-1, 3-1) sophomore pitcher Devin Wallace struck out nine and allowed just two hits, one walk and one hit-by-pitch.

“My two-seam worked very well and the mixture of pitches that (catcher) Jenna (Powell) called,” Wallace said.

Needs improvement: Holly Springs (3-5, 0-3) allowed the Mustangs to pick up extra bases by either throwing behind the runner or making errors in the outfield. In the first inning, Middle Creek’s Lauren Panella went all the way around as her hit – ruled a triple – was missed by one outfielder and then bobbled after the throw to the infield.

“We’re making small mistakes. It shows kind of our age,” first-year coach Britney Smith said. “We preach to them that it’s not how we start, it’s how we finish, so we’re looking for improvement.”

Putting up numbers: Panella went 4-of-4 with two RBIs. Megan Walker drove in two, Wallace had two RBIs, Kiley Majette had one and Rachael Klass had three RBIs. Jackie Schavone had one RBI.

“We were all hitting the ball pretty good. We were all making really good contact. We’re starting to come around as a hitting team which is what we’ve always been, but it took a while to get us started,” Panella said. “We’re starting to get a lot better. We’ve got some things to prove to people.”

Holly Springs’ Ashton Jones and Angela Jessup had the only Golden Hawks hits.
