Ken Meyer: Enough about former chamber director

Enough about former chamber director

As a former chairman of the board of the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce, I am disappointed with the assault on former chamber director Scoop Green in the local newspapers.

A recent story focused only on funding given by the town to the chamber and the relationship between the council and Mr. Green.

No stories have focused on the things Green brought to the chamber and to Holly Springs. During his tenure, he took direction from the group’s board of directors, which was comprised of business leaders and town representatives. His actions were not simply his own.

Many new initiatives began under Green’s leadership, including the partner’s breakfast, State of the Town, a shop-local program, an economic forecast summit and more. Green fostered a relationship with Novant Health, which got Rex Healthcare serious about building a hospital in Holly springs.

Green was hired by a search committee which included current Councilman Tim Sack. He was hired to run the chamber as an independent organization, not as a town department. Each year, he provided a letter to the former town manager itemizing expenditures for funds provided by the town. At no time was there a question about the contents of that letter and the expenditures reported.

Green wasn’t hired to run the chamber as a social club. Under his leadership, membership increased, programs were expanded, and financial stability formed.

It seems that the Town Council had issues in not being able to control the chamber as it had before Green arrived.
