Principal named to lead Cardinal Charter Academy in Cary

From staff reportsFebruary 25, 2014

Crystal Scillitani has resigned as principal of Efland Cheeks Elementary School in Orange County to become the founding principal of Cardinal Charter Academy, opening this fall in Cary.

Scillitani has worked in education for 17 years, including time in Wake County as an assistant principal at Green Hope High School and as principal at Fuller Elementary School. She became principal of Efland Cheeks in 2011.

Charter schools are taxpayer-funded, tuition-free schools that are exempt from some of the regulations that traditional public schools must follow. Cardinal Charter received state approval to open this year, initially offering kindergarten through sixth grade.

Cardinal Charter, which will be managed by Florida-based Charter Schools USA, plans to build a facility at 1020 St. Charles Place in Cary that will be ready in time for the start of classes in the fall.
