Green Hope’s girls lacrosse team had just two losses last season – both to eventual state champ East Chapel Hill. The Falcons (17-2) return a lot of firepower as does the rest of “Conference 2” which has all seven Southwest Wake Athletic conference schools who field the sport.
Green Hope, the 2012 state champ, will return San Diego State signee Katherine Smith (72 goals), Campbell signee Mackenzie Koeller (39 goals, 19 assists) and junior Lilly Stanley (52 goals, 35 assists).
Apex (13-5), a perennial power, brings back conference player of the year junior Mia Castagnero (53 goals, 30 assists), who has committed to Richmond.
Also returning are junior Abbey Flynn (44 goals, 15 assists), senior goalie Rose Redfoot, Liberty recruit Erin Cornell (49 goals, 13 assists) and Old Dominion recruit Jessie DeLuca (27 goals, 16 assists). The Cougars’ new coach is Mike Bagnasco, a former assistant to coach Sara Fellows, who is now in graduate school.
Athens Drive (12-6) took a blow before the season when junior Kieran Garvey, a Gardner-Webb junior commit, tore her ACL. The team has other talented juniors, however, in Coastal Carolina commitment Madeline Bromley (48 goals, 22 assists) and senior midfielder Haley Jay Lohmiller (35 goals, eight assists).
Panther Creek (9-7), the fourth team to make the postseason last year, returns junior attacker Sarah Oeschslin (30 goals, 9 assists).
The bottom three teams in last year’s conference each return one all-conference player.
Middle Creek (4-8) has junior Holly Hite (23 goals), while Holly Springs (2-11) has senior Morgan Willow and Cary (1-15) has junior midfielder Arielle Patra.
