Hometown heroes: men’s soccer

Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler, a former N.C. Gatorade state player of the year winner, started in 19 games this past season for the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s soccer team.

Vandermaas-Peeler (Athens Drive 2011 graduate) had three goals and four assists.

Yanni Hachem, N.C. State: Hachem (Cardinal Gibbons, 2013) played in six games at midfield. Teammate Nazmi Albadawi (Athens Drive, 2010) was second on the team in goals with five. Davis Robinson (Apex, 2013) redshirted his first year.

Ryan Thompson, Duke: Thompson (Green Hope, 2012) played in three games this season, logging 36 minutes. Teammate Chase Keesling (Green Hope, 2011) played in two games, and Alex Long (Green Hope, 2009) started in all 19 games as goalkeeper and made 77 saves on 236 shots faced.

Max Swartz, Ohio State: Swartz (Panther Creek, 2013) is a freshman goalkeeper who didn’t see action his first season.

Eric Steber, Furman: Steber (Cary, 2011) played in 18 games this past seasonas a defender.

Alex Herbst,Appalachian State: Herbst (Apex, 2012) played in 18 games for the Mountaineers, starting in 15. He had four assists. Teammate Tommy Labriola (Green Hope, 2013) played in eight games and scored one goal.

David Sizemore, UNC-Wilmington: Sizemore (Fuquay-Varina, 2011) played in 17 games for the Seahawks, starting 13, and scored four goals with one assist. Teammate Kellen Foster (Green Hope, 2013) started 15 games.

Andrew Sotak, UNC-Asheville: Sotak (Fuquay-Varina, 2012) had one assist on the season for the Bulldogs, playing 10 games this season (starting in eight). Teammate Cole Schwietering (Fuquay-Varina, 2012) started in all 19 games, and Brian Wendelgass (Cary, 2013) saw playing time in three games.

Andrew Starnes, VMI: The Keydets used Starnes (Fuquay-Varina, 2012) in 16 games.

Cameron Mulvey, Campbell: Mulvey (Fuquay-Varina, 2012) started 17 games for the Camels. Teammate Scooter Oliver (Panther Creek, 2011) started in 17 games as a junior, while Ethan Hall (Athens Drive, 2010) started in 19 games as a senior goalkeeper and Michael Wisniewski (Green Hope, 2011) started in nine games as a redshirt sophomore.

Ty Unger, Valparaiso: Unger (Middle Creek, 2012) played in 12 games for the Crusaders as a sophomore.

Adrian Gonzales, Louisburg Junior College: Gonzales (Fuquay-Varina, 2012) had a monster season, as he scored 21 goals while also having nine assists. The 21 goals this season was ranked ninth in the NJCAA, and his 52 total points ranked eighth.
