Hometown heroes: FCS, Division II and Division III football

Corron Boston and Josh Ricci suited up for Lenoir-Rhyne in this year’s NCAA Division II football championship game, which Northwest Missouri State won 43-28.

Boston, formerly of Holly Springs, ran three times for 27 yards in the title game and had 37 carries for 320 yards and two touchdowns on the year. Ricci, a freshman offensive lineman from Fuquay-Varina, redshirted.

Kevin Fogg, Liberty: Fogg (Apex 2009 graduate) played in all 12 games for the Flames on the defensive side of the ball and on special teams. In his last year, he recorded 110 punt return yards and 302 kickoff return yards. On defense, though, Fogg recorded 44 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and four interceptions, with one of them returned for a touchdown.

Daniel Nash, Western Carolina: Nash (Holly Springs, 2013) played in 11 games for the Catamounts this past season, as he recorded 10 total tackles.

Mike Estes, Gardner-Webb: Estes (Athens Drive, 2012) started in all 12 games. He had 18 receptions for 278 yards and one touchdown. His longest catch was for 40 yards, and he averaged 23.2 yards per catch.

Tyson Fernandez, Appalachian State: Fernandez (Fuquay-Varina, 2012) played 11 games for the Mountaineers last season, recording two starts on the defensive line. On the season, he had 14 total tackles.

Ricky Fergerson, Appalachian State: Ferguson (Fuquay-Varina, 2011) played 12 games last season at running back, getting two starts. He was the second leading rusher on the team with 215 rushing yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. He also had eight receptions for 30 yards on the season.

Kameron Bryant, Appalachian State: Bryant (Panther Creek, 2010) started eight games last season for Appalachian State at quarterback. He completed 237 of 333 passes (71.1 percent) for 2,713 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also had 158 yards rushing on the season, as he averaged 239.2 yards per game.

Malcolm Thaxton, Columbia: Thaxton (Fuquay-Varina, 2010) played in 10 games for Columbia last season, recording 38 tackles on the defensive end of the ball. He had his best month in October, recording 4.5 tackles per game as a defensive back.

Von Williams, Campbell: Williams (Holly Springs 2012) played sparingly for the Camels this past season, getting his opportunity in six games. In those games, he had 13 total tackles and recorded an interception.

Michael Donte Johnson, Fayetteville State: Johnson (Cary, 2011) was an all-region selection after totaling 65 tackles, eight pass breakups and five interceptions this past season – all were team-highs.

Jon Moore, Wingate: Moore (Middle Creek, 2012) saw limited action after redshirting his freshman year. He played in nine games for Wingate this past season, recording one kick return.

Fre’Shad Hunter, Shaw: Hunter (Cary, 2010) was once committed to N.C. State coming out of college and played one season at Georgia Military College. Now a sophomore for the Bears, he played in three games, totaling nine tackles and a half-sack.

David Salmon, Campbell: Salmon (Middle Creek, 2013) redshirted this past season for Campbell, and he could compete next year at the quarterback position.

Steven Parrish, Methodist: Only a freshman, Parrish (Athens Drive, 2013) will look to make a push on the defensive side of the ball next season. He currently is listed as a defensive back.

Matt Williams, Davidson: Williams (Panther Creek, 2013) tore his knee and didn’t play for Davidson this past season.
