Hometown heroes: volleyball and field hockey

Alston Kearns, who helped lead Apex to the state volleyball title in 2010, is coming off a career milestone at N.C. State.

She posted her 1,000th career dig, and the junior led the team with 461 for the year. Kearns (Apex, class of 2011) also had 22 aces. Teammate Madison Brown (Green Hope, 2013) played in 29 matches, starting in 17. She ended the year with 183 digs and had 19 aces.

Madi Bugg, Stanford: Bugg (Cardinal Gibbons, 2012) was a second-team all-American and PAC-12 setter of the year, leading the Cardinals to the NCAA title match.

Ashleigh Crutcher, Maryland: Crutcher (Cary Academy, 2011) was a second-team all-ACC selection, having 304 kills, 17 aces and 168 digs.

Megan Gravley, Elon: Gravley (Apex, 2012) completed her second season, as she had 341 kills this past season, playing the entire season for Elon. Teammate Kris Harris (Apex, 2011) suffered a season-ending knee injury in mid-October, but was leading Elon with 198 kills and 77 blocks in 77 sets played.

Christina Vucich, Duke: Duke made the NCAA tournament, as Vucich (Green Hope, 2012) saw action in six matches. She had 38 total assists, five kills, and four digs for the Blue Devils.

Brandi Anderson, Western Carolina: Anderson (Holly Springs, 2010) played in 30 matches for the Catamounts. She had 145 kills, 423 total assists, 36 digs and 44 blocks.

Jill Edwards, Shippensburg (Pa.): Edwards (Panther Creek, 2010) had a fantastic year, as Shippensburg went 29-10. She recorded 563 kills, 24 assists, 417 digs and 58 blocks and was an honorable mention NCAA DII all-American.

Megan Hooks, Flagler (Fla.): Hooks (Apex, 2013) had 134 kills, 14 aces, 65 digs and 54 total blocks on the season, as she played in 28 matches for Flagler.

Erin Harwood, Fairmont State (Ga.): Harwood (Cary, 2013) had 57 kills in 34 matches and led the team with 75 aces and 318 digs.

Danielle Plante, Mount Olive: Plante (Fuquay-Varina, 2012) played in 23 matches as a sophomore, recording 77 kills, 21 digs and 15 blocks.

Jasmine Aguinaldo, Meredith: Aguinaldo (Panther Creek, 2012) played in 32 matches and recorded 105 kills, 38 aces, 159 digs and 114 blocks. Teammate Clarke Glendenning (Cary, 2010) had 536 assists, and Emily Hendricks, also a 2012 Panther Creek grad, played in 18 matches.

Cate Glendenning, Pfeiffer: Glendenning (Cary Academy, 2012) was third on her team in assists (184) and second in digs (190).

Ashley Battle, Virginia Tech: Battle (Middle Creek, 2013) redshirted her freshman year for the Hokies.

Field hockey

Tyler Powell, North Carolina: Powell (Cary Academy, 2012) played in seven games for the Tar Heels this past season.
