Garner and Cardinal Gibbons hold the top two positions in The News & Observer Cup standings after the fall season.
Garner leads Gibbons 26-25. Both programs were in the final N&O rankings for football, volleyball and boys soccer.
The News & Observer Cup awards points based on the final N&O polls in football, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, baseball and softball – or three sports each athletic season. The N&O also does rankings in boys and girls lacrosse, but those rankings are not used in the N&O Cup because of limited participation in lacrosse.
Garner finished the fall ranked No. 6 in football (10 points) and No. 8 in volleyball and boys soccer (8 points for each).
Gibbons was No. 1 in volleyball (15 points), No. 10 in football (6 points) and No. 12 in boys soccer (four points).
The only other school to be ranked in all three fall sports was Millbrook.
Green Hope, the inaugural winner of the Cup in 2012-13, is tied with Wake Forest in 11th place. All of Green Hope’s 14 points came from its runner-up finish in the boys soccer rankings.
Apex and Fuquay-Varina, both ranked in volleyball and boys soccer, are in the top six with 18 points. Middle Creek, is 13th with its 13 points from football. Holly Springs is 17th with 10 points from volleyball.
