Driver, checking damage after Cary crash, killed by second car on US 1

From staff reportsNovember 27, 2013

— Eduardo Rivas, 33, of Cameron in Moore County died Wednesday morning when a car skidded and hit him while he was out checking damage to his car, which had skidded in the same place shortly before, police said.

Rivas was pronounced dead at the scene, near Tryon Road and U.S. 64.

Police were called at 5:40 a.m. after Rivas was hit.

Police were still investigating the incident Wednesday morning, but they said it appeared that both cars had hydroplaned on the wet pavement during Wednesday’s rain and went of the highway.

The crash closed one lane of U.S. 1 northbound for a time.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken to WakeMed Hospital in Cary as a precaution, but had no obvious injuries, police said.

Rivas was an active member of the military, police said.

They said they believed he was in the Air Force and assigned to Fort Bragg.

Police urged motorists to be cautious in the area because crash-reconstruction officers expected to be working in the area after the weather cleared and allowed use of laser measuring devices.
