SWAC Friday Football games

Panther Creek (7-2, 4-1)

at Holly Springs (5-4, 4-1)

This game is for second place in the Southwest Wake Athletic Conference. Holly Springs played inspired football Friday after Anthony Gomez’s gruesome injury, and Panther Creek was dominant against Apex.

All-time series: Tied 3-3.

Green Hope (4-5, 1-4)

at Apex (2-7, 1-4)

Green Hope and Apex have each lost three straight, and playoff chances are looking slim for both teams.

All-time series: Apex leads 11-3.

Fuquay-Varina (5-4, 2-3)

at Athens Drive (4-5, 2-3)

While both teams likely won’t get one of the league’s three automatic bids, finishing fourth would be a nice consolation prize and likely will come with a playoff berth as a wild card.

Last eight meetings: Fuquay leads 7-1.

Middle Creek (7-2, 5-0)

at Cary (3-6, 1-4)

With a win, the No. 4 Mustangs can lock up their fifth conference title – outright or shared – in the last seven years, and third consecutive. Cary will try to play spoiler.

All-time series: Tied 5-5.

All SWAC football games start at 7:30 p.m.

Other local games

Cardinal Gibbons (7-2, 4-1)

at Orange (8-0, 5-0)

Cardinal Gibbons isn’t out of the title picture in the Big Eight 3A Conference. The Crusaders have gotten their offense clicking again since a week-eight loss to Southern Durham.

Game time: 7 p.m.

Cannon School (2-6)

at Wake Christian (5-5)

Last week’s 24-10 win against North Raleigh Christian should assure the Bulldogs of a playoff spot in next week’s N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II playoffs. Another win could help its seeding.

Game time: 7 p.m.

Cary Christian (4-5)

at Rocky Mount Academy (7-2)

The Knights get the sixth seed in the NCISAA eight-man football playoffs and will travel to the team they just faced last week – and lost to, 52-6.

Game time: 7 p.m.

Player of the week

How do you recover four fumbles in one game? Middle Creek linebacker Tom Hartshorn did, and he returned one for a touchdown in a blowout win against Athens Drive.
