Week 10 SWAC Friday football previews

October 22, 2013

SWAC Friday football games

Holly Springs (4-4, 3-1)

at Green Hope (4-4, 1-3)

Holly Springs will be facing its second spread offense in as many weeks. This game will have playoff implications for both teams. Green Hope’s 3-1 nonconference record helped the Falcons’ chances of getting back to the playoffs for a second straight year, but more conference wins might be needed to help secure a spot. Overall records are used to select wild-card teams, but if there is a tie for the final few spots, ties are broken by conference winning percentage. Holly Springs will want to continue its push for a top-three finish.

All-time series: Holly Springs leads 3-1.

Athens Drive (4-4, 2-2)

at Middle Creek (6-2, 4-0)

Athens Drive returns after a week off, and the Jaguars will match strength-for-strength when running back Dominique Lynch takes on Middle Creek’s rushing defense. But to Middle Creek’s advantage, Athens Drive has given up more than 250 yards passing in three games and more than 300 in two.

All-time series: Middle Creek leads 7-1.

Cary (3-4, 1-3)

at Fuquay-Varina (4-4, 1-3)

Fuquay-Varina has won nine straight against Cary since 2004 (the two met in the regular season and playoffs in 2010). Cary’s win against Apex last week ensured all Southwest Wake Athletic Conference teams will have at least one win in league play. With both teams averaging fewer than 10 pass attempts a game, this should be the first game to go final.

Last 15 meetings: Fuquay-Varina leads 13-2.

Apex (2-5, 1-3)

at Panther Creek (6-2, 3-1)

Apex will have to bounce back emotionally after losing games in the fourth quarter in back-to-back weeks. The Cougars, who have lost three games by six points or less, are 11th in the area in rushing offense but will face a stiff test against Panther Creek’s front seven. The Catamounts are allowing just 12.8 points per game.

All-time series: Panther Creek leads 4-2.

All SWAC game times are 7:30 p.m.
